The photograph is an ‘unconscious’ archive, intended for viewing in its own context, but lacking the facility to anticipate how far in the future viewers may look at the same image, and how it may be used. As the metanarrative of nations dissolves into partial histories, censorship, heightened surveillance and edited images, the accidental photo-archive over time will reveal alternative histories, incidental truths, and part narratives.
This seminar will discuss the photographic archive, against the backdrop of a curated archive put together based on available collections of photos in Kerala. The project is executed by the Kochi Biennale Foundation and Critical Collective.
