The Let’s Talk series continues, with German artist Flo Maak in conversation at Pepper House.
Flo Maak is an artist based in Berlin, Germany. While his practice is based on photography, he usually develops large installations in which the images are related and contextualised through architectural interventions and sculptural elements.
During his residency at Pepper House, he has researched ‘invasive’ botanical species in and around Kochi. His research has included scientists from institutions like the Kerala Forest Research Institute and the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute as well as local people about their experiences with introduced plants. He has focused on a plant known locally as ‘Communist Pacha’. It can now be found in many places around the world and is often seen as a threat to native flora. As it spread around the world, it was given different names, but only in Kerala is it associated with communism. Flo will also present some of his older works that paved the way for his current interest in ‘indigenous’, ‘alien’ and ‘invasive alien species’. Afterwards he will present results of his research in Kochi and show first examples of his new work created at Pepper House.
Flo Maak is part of the bangaloREsidency of the Goethe-Institut, Bangalore.
